Full Time

Grass

Loading Artist is now my full time job!

I’m currently writing this post whilst sitting in a café..! JUST LIKE I’VE ALWAYS FANTASIZED ABOUT DOING!

The fantastic support you’re showing me by being patrons is what’s turned the idea of going full-time from being something I daydreamed about at work, to being my parents waking nightmare: quitting my financially stable day job to dive headfirst into the chaotic world of webcomics.

Like a hot bath, it’s taking me a little time to get into it. I’m trying to figure out a routine (via daily schedules and prioritizing) so that I don’t succumb to Internet Time. My current goals are sticking to a consistent weekly comic schedule (UH OH TOMORROW ALREADY, WHAT), more standalone pictures, more blog posts, and preparing for Chromacon!

I’ve made a new wallpaper and Facebook cover to kick things off!

Thanks again! I love you guyz!

What time is it?

Adventure Time Crossover

It’s time for some fan art of my favourite show!

I’m not usually a ‘fan art creating’ type of guy (I think the last time I created fan art was back when I planned on becoming a professional ‘Garfield’er), but Adventure Time has a special place in my heart and I felt like giving something back for all the things it’s given me.

I’ll be posting comics again starting this Thursday, just FYI. Hope you’re having a good 2015 so far!

Most Viewed of 2014

2014mostviewed

I thought it might be interesting to look back and see which Loading Artist comics were viewed the most this year, and then try to give a couple reasons as to why that may be.

Bear in mind these stats do not include any views on reposted versions like on Imgur or on other Facebook pages, etc.

Doing this from 5th to 1st to build that SUSPENSE…!

While I think this one is good enough to gather a lot of views on it’s own merits, I think it being the first ‘gag-a-day’ Loading Artist comic with the new website layout prompted more shares.

Also, I think that’s the best looking girl character I’ve drawn (not that it has anything to do with it (or does it..)).

I think the gag at the beginning is what makes this comic what it is. Also it’s about Bitcoin and that was a hot topic around that time.

FUN FACT: I have an actual ‘Donate Bitcoins’ button beneath that comic.

I’m really happy with the pacing in this one. I feel the overlapping speech bubbles at the end add a lot to the timing.

Also there is a cat.

This is one of my favourite comics I’ve drawn. I’d chalk it up to the combination of colourful visuals (though not too detailed) and length (though not too wordy) with the morbid twist.

‘Born Ready’ was interesting to me because it sparked a lot of ‘I don’t get it’ responses (compared to other ones), and yet it was also many people’s favourite comic in a while.

However I think the reason it is the #1 viewed Loading Artist comic this year is mainly because it was the comic that was up while I disappeared to America for two months.

So there you have it. I hope this was somewhat interesting for you, so it doesn’t just seem like I’m rambling about the greatness of my comics and what makes them so great.

I have one more blog post planned before the end of the year which goes over what happened with Loading Artist in 2014. Thanks for reading!

I'm AFK in USA!

I’m traveling around America for 50 days! AAAAAAGGH!

I meant to post this before flying, but I ended up getting food poisoned a few days before my flight so things got pretty hectic. Since then things have been non stop and this is the first chance I’ve had in two weeks to post this (I’m typing on my phone in a hotel bed).

I left New Zealand in the beginning of October, and won’t be back until the end of November. That’s quite a while to be off the grid as a webcomic, but oh well, it’s a pretty good reason to.. I think. It will clear my head and fill it with something new. I’ll be taking a journal with me and filling it out as I go because I’m bound to come across some untapped pools of inspiration somewhere. (Also because my memory just sucks and I don’t want to come back with nothing but a curious case of jet lag.)

Speaking of which, I think I’ll be tweeting during the trip so if you want to keep up with me be sure to follow me!

Upping The Ante

You may have noticed some changes (i.e. improvements) to the site and with Patreon, so I thought I’d fill some pixels about it here.

Firstly, thank you for all of your feedback on the new site design. It has helped me pinpoint the areas that needed fixing or ignoring. By far the most mentioned was the broken status of the ‘random button’; how something so seemingly small was so broken for so long makes me question everything I know about computers, but it’s unbroken now so yay wHaTeVeR!!!!

Another feature that was requested was having navigation at the bottom of the comic so you wouldn’t need to scroll back up. Makes sense, so I’ve added it. However, clicking the comic still takes you to the next one as it did before (handy tip). I’ve also de-cluttered the front page some and allowed it to breathe a bit more, as well as a bunch of other minor fixes (but aren’t interesting enough to mention).

Now I want to talk about Patreon and the KUH-RAZY improvements I’ve done to that. Now even just $1 per comic will get you pretty much everything. Timelapse video? Heck yeah! Sketches and doodles of that comic? Sugar ma noodle! High-resolution download? Abso-lutely! Picture pack? WHAT?!? ?

The picture pack is a new reward; it’s a collection of images from that comic which are share-ready and reusable (e.g. transparent cut outs of a certain character and/or panel, a version of the comic with the text removed, etc). Basically things you might want to re-use in your own way, whatever that may be. To put on your own twist to the comic, or translations, or using it as a spray in Team Fortress 2, or an avatar, or a tattoo on your face, it’s up to you!

Along with boosting the $1 pledge, I’ve also boosted the higher tiers; most notably the new Super Supporter reward which you may have noticed animating beneath the latest comic. Click and hold to see their special animations! Preview shown below (the preview is not clickable, don’t even try).

That about sums it up for this post. Thank you so much for being here and reading this.
